Meenakari is the art of decorating metal with coloured enamel, and Jaipur is closely associated with it. In jewellery it shows up as bright patterns of flowers, birds and vines, either on the front of a piece or on the reverse of a Kundan design.
Artificial jewellery: the descriptions on this page are about look and finish. They do not mean precious metal, natural gemstones or real diamonds. Ask for the materials and dimensions of the exact design you choose.
What Meenakari-style jewellery is
In traditional work, enamel colours are fused onto engraved metal. Artificial Meenakari jewellery recreates the look with enamel or enamel-style colour on a base metal, usually with a gold-tone finish. Common colours are red, green, blue, pink and white, and many designs combine Meenakari with Kundan stones or pearl-look beads.
Pieces you will find in Meenakari style
- Necklace sets with enamelled pendants or panels
- Drop and chandelier earrings
- Bangles and bracelets, often in pairs or stacks
- Rings with an enamelled top
When to wear it
Meenakari brings colour, so it suits festivals, mehendi and haldi functions, and bright traditional outfits. A good rule is to pick one enamel colour from your outfit and let the piece repeat it. Against a plain saree or suit, a colourful Meenakari set can be the main feature of the look.
Caring for Meenakari pieces
Enamel can chip if it is knocked or dropped, so store Meenakari pieces in separate pouches or compartments and avoid stacking heavy bangles on top of them. Keep them dry and away from perfume. See the care guide and our Meenakari selection notes.
Questions
What is the difference between Meenakari and Kundan?
Meenakari is coloured enamel decoration; Kundan is a way of setting stones in a frame. Many Rajasthani designs combine both, with Kundan on the front and Meenakari on the back.
Does Meenakari colour fade?
Enamel colour is stable, but it can chip if knocked. Store pieces separately and keep them away from chemicals.
