Artificial jewellery stays beautiful far longer with a few simple habits. This guide applies to all the styles we offer, with extra notes for Kundan, Meenakari, oxidised, pearl and plated pieces.
Five habits that matter most
- Put jewellery on last. Apply perfume, hairspray, lotion and make-up first, let them dry, then put on your jewellery.
- Take it off first. Remove jewellery before changing clothes, sleeping, exercising, swimming or bathing.
- Wipe after every wear. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove sweat and skin oils before storing.
- Store pieces separately. Use the original box or individual zip pouches so stones do not scratch and chains do not tangle.
- Keep it dry. Store away from bathrooms and damp cupboards. A sachet of silica gel in the box helps in humid months.
What to avoid
- Water, including handwashing while wearing rings and bracelets
- Perfume, sanitiser, hairspray and body lotion on the jewellery
- Household chemicals, chlorine and salt water
- Chemical jewellery cleaners, toothpaste and abrasive cloths
- Long exposure to direct sunlight or heat
Notes by style
Kundan
Keep completely dry. Store flat in its box so stones and drops are not pressed, and lift the piece by its edges.
Meenakari
Enamel can chip if knocked. Use separate pouches and do not stack heavy bangles on top.
Oxidised
Never use silver polish or a polishing cloth: it removes the dark finish. Wipe dry only.
Pearl and beaded
Store flat rather than hanging, so the thread does not stretch. Keep away from perfume.
American Diamond
Wipe stones with a dry cloth to restore sparkle. Store separately so stones do not scratch other pieces.
Gold-plated
Plating wears with friction, sweat and chemicals. Wipe after wearing and rotate daily pieces.
Travelling with jewellery
Pack each piece in its own pouch, place sets flat in a hard box, and keep jewellery in your hand luggage. Put a small silica gel sachet in the box if you are travelling somewhere humid.
If a piece starts to dull
Wipe it with a dry soft cloth first; most dullness is a film of oil or perfume. Do not scrub or use chemicals. Fading of plating over time is normal wear for artificial jewellery and depends on how often and how the piece is worn.
Questions
Can artificial jewellery get wet?
Avoid water. Moisture can dull plating, loosen settings and affect the foil behind Kundan stones. Remove jewellery before washing hands or bathing.
How should I clean artificial jewellery?
Wipe gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth after each wear. Avoid chemical cleaners, toothpaste and polishing cloths, especially on oxidised pieces.
How should I store a jewellery set?
Store it flat in its box or a padded pouch, with each piece separate, in a dry place. Add a silica gel sachet in humid weather.
