Jewellery terms, explained

Jewellery listings use many style words. This glossary explains the terms used across the Kotawala Jewels site, so you can describe exactly what you want when you call or WhatsApp. All Kotawala Jewels pieces are artificial jewellery: these words describe a look or finish, never precious metal content. See also the FAQ.

Terms A to Z

American Diamond (AD)

A trade name for synthetic stones, commonly cubic zirconia, cut to sparkle like diamond. They are not natural diamonds. Read more

Kundan

A way of setting flat or lightly cut stones in a frame. In artificial jewellery the stones are usually glass, set in a gold-tone or antique-tone frame. Read more

Polki

Traditionally uncut diamonds. Polki-look artificial jewellery imitates that uneven, softer shine with non-precious stones. Read more

Meenakari

Coloured enamel decoration. Many Rajasthani designs combine Kundan on the front with Meenakari on the back. Read more

Oxidised

A darkened, silver-tone finish, usually on an alloy or brass base in artificial jewellery. Polishing removes it, so wipe it dry only. Read more

Antique finish

A muted, aged gold tone rather than a bright shine, often chosen for occasion and bridal sets. Read more

Gold-plated

A thin gold-tone layer over a base metal. Plating wears with friction, sweat and chemicals, so wipe pieces after wearing. Read more

Artificial, imitation and fashion jewellery

Jewellery made without precious metal or natural gemstones. Style names describe the look and finish, not precious metal content. Read more

Necklace set

A necklace sold with matching earrings, sometimes with other pieces. Ask what a specific set includes. Read more

Studs, hoops, drops and chandeliers

Earring shapes from smallest to largest. Studs and small hoops suit long days; chandelier earrings are statement pieces. Read more

Halo, three-stone, eternity and stackable rings

Common ring designs: a centre stone ringed by small stones, three stones in a row, stones all around the band, and slim bands made to be worn together. Read more

Tennis bracelet

A flexible bracelet set with a continuous line of small stones, easy to wear every day. Read more
